Castell Coch

Castell CochChances are that if you've ever travelled to Cardiff by car along the M4 motorway then you may have spotted perched on a hillside just north of the city Castell Coch.

Sometime referred to as the fairytale castle, Castell Coch actually translates as the Red Castle.

The castle was built in the 19th century on the remains of a 13th century fort in the village of Tongwynlais.  It was designed by the renowned architecht William Burges on behalf of the 3rd Marquess of Bute, the same team behind the elaborate restoration of Cardiff Castle, some 5 miles to the south.  In fact the castle was intended to act as the Marquess' summer retreat.

It's well worth a visit, if only for the terrific views from the top of the towers of the city of Cardiff and onwards to the Severn Estuary.
